Eureka Discovery Walks

The old Jefferson School building is a classic Streamline Moderne, one of few in the city. It's the starting point for the Clark's Addition tour. No page for that tour yet-

Discovery Walks: Directions & Descriptions

Painted Ladies of Hillsdale: Features a neighborhood well known for it's colorful and elaborately decorated Victorian and other historic homes. A very easy walk, with extended standing, all city sidewalks, flat with no hills or inclines, very short- 3-4 blocks.
Old Town Oddities: Ramble through Old Town Eureka discovering the odd, the wierd, the unusual, the quirky. An easy walk, mostly on city sidewalks, with a few inclines and some alleys. Public restroom in Old Town.
Eureka's Lost Freeway: Plans to bypass or bisect the City of Eureka with a freeway (similar to Arcata) were abandoned in the late 90's after years of wrangling and disputes with residents and business owners. This walk follows the path of the last proposal pitched before the whole plan was ditched. A long walk, with options that make it even longer, but mostly flat, easy, city sidewalks.
O Street Circle & Eureka High School Neighborhood: Days of prosperity and moedernity are reflected in the layout, architecture, and grace of the homes in this neighborhood. Medium-length walk, with some off-sidewalk diversions and alleyways, so expect some uneven ground.
Great Depression Walk: During the Great Depression, Eureka managed to squeak by with some federally funded building programs, and support for some local industries. This walk tours some WPA project and other buildings. A long walk, with several blocks of walking between stops. Slight inlines, but all city sidewalks.
Elk River Wildlife Sanctuary: Eureka is on of the few cities that has its own wildlife sanctuary, now the trails development are the primary endeavor of the Trails Trust of Humboldt Bay. This walk is over rough, uneven ground, some sand, some wet, some rocks. Of moderate length, and all fairly flat, with options to extend the walk to the spit or beyond.
Unknown Waterfront: From the Adorni Center to Target and the 101 Bridge. A long walk, some traffic, mostly sidewalks but some are older and uneven, option to walk along the railroad tracks. Restroom at Target (for customers only)
Sequoia Park Fitness Walk: A circuit of one of Eureka's favorite neighborhoods around the park, zoo, and hospital-medicial services area. Called a "fitness walk" because of the two large and steep gullies and hills on city sidewalks, but also within the park where there will also be some very uneven ground and some slippery paths. A long walk, restrooms in the park.
Arts & Murals: an all-time favorite walk that keeps changing as art and murals are removed, built or painted over, and new art is installed. A long walk, with frequent stops, city sidewalks and alleys, some traffic and busy crosswalks. Public restroom in Old Town.
Grandes Dames of Eureka: View some of Eureka's grandest Victorians and most significant and large buildings. A long walk, with some inclines, all on city sidewalks, with some extended stops at the various buildings.
Street Names Walk: A ramble through the mid-town area where some streets, early in Eureka's history, had different names from what they are called today. Finding the evidence makes for a fun and interactive walk. Long, with options to extend, mostly flat city sidewalks
