To take the Art & Murals Discovery Walk, park your car near the corner of 2nd and I streets. From the 2nd and I street corner, walk up I street (away from the Bay) on the west side of the street. Follow the path outlined below. Along the way, there are many places to stop and take a break, and get refreshments such as coffee, sandwiches, pastries, pizza, etc.

View the mural, “The Shifted Victorian” from the Rural Burl Mural Bureau (RBMB) that is on the wall of the Times Printing Company building, facing the public parking lot, corner I & 3rd. Stand with your feet placed in the yellow feet painted on the sidewalk for best viewing.

Walk up I street, at the light cross west to H street, and at the corner of H and 4th, turn around and look back across 4th street to the large yellow building and mourn the disappearance of the “Tribute to Keith Haring” (RBMB) that used to adorn the outside wall of the Lost Coast Brewery building. The picture available at the Ink People website is a very, very small section of this dramatic and lively mural.

Post Office Alley Mural: Continue up H street to the Main Post Office. View the mural by the RBMB that is down the Post Office driveway on the side of the Expert Tire Company building. Click on the image at left for full size images of this mural.

Jungle Mural: Continue up H street, crossing 6th street to view the exotic plants mural (RBMB) on the side of the Wells Fargo bank building.

Walk south (west) on 6th street and continue two blocks to F street, crossing to the other side of the street, to view “Across the Fruited Plain” mural designed by Paula Cunningham and painted by Ink People students that adorns the side of Berliner’s Cornucopia building at 530 F street.

Head downtown on F street, crossing 5th, and jog down the blocks to the corner of E and 4th to view “The Earthquake” mural  (RBMB) that faces onto the George Peterson Insurance Company parking lot. It’s painted on the side of the adjacent building at 305 4th street.

Proceed down E toward the waterfront, jog-crossing to get to 1st and C. Proceed south (west) on 1st to view the mural of “Eureka’s Waterfront, Early 1890’s” painted by artist David Crapnell on the side of the Waterfront Gallery building at 220 2nd street, and is facing the public parking lot between that building and the brown Aalfs & Evans building.

Cross 1st toward the waterfront and admire the partial mural , “The Harvest,” by artist Paula Cunningham and apprentices, that decorates the building at 333 1st street that used to be the Co-op.

Return up 1st street to 2nd, turn east on 2nd to walk past the Romano Gabriel sculpture garden, “People of the World.”

Continue on 2nd to E street, proceed to the Clark Plaza. View the sculpture work on the plaza, “Saga,” by Melvin Schuler.

Walk down Opera Alley to F street, at the end of the alley at F, enjoy “Opera Alley Paradise” by Larry Laitman.

Walk up F street, crossing 4th, and just past the NorthCoast Dance academy building, see the Alley Dogs, “No Barking at Any Time” mini-mural.

Cross over F street from the alley to the G street alley and at the end see the “Alley Cats” mini-mural, the dogs’ companion piece. Located on the side of the Richard Sweasey building and across the alley from the back of Club West. Both by  RBMB.

New Mural: Walk up to 5th, and cross to the southwest corner 5th & F street, view the latest addition to Eureka's murals, another RBMB production. The mural overlooks the County parking lot facing 5th street on the side of the blue building. This mural was just being installed on the day of our Discovery Walk!

We continued our Art & Murals Tour with a quick visit to the Redwood Art Association Gallery (RAA) temporarily located in the office space for lease across from the mural at #14.

If you still have energy for walking, continue up F street to the Morris Graves Museum of Art. View the mural along the side of the adjacent building, and follow along behind the building to view works on display in the "Melvin Schuler Sculpture Garden" outdoors. Sculptures on display at the time of this walk were: "Burning Desire" by Richard Kistler, July 19, 2003 - February 15, 2004. The Museum is open Thursday - Sunday, noon to 5pm; open until 9pm for "Arts Alive,'" and some evening hours for special events. Click here for the Museum's web page.
