“A Street by any other Name”

Start at Hammond Park, corner of “F” and 14th. Numbers below correspond to numbers on the map. (Map to be scanned and uploaded sometime soon) There are other locations where street names are stamped in the pavement. This walk is a tour of the most interesting streets, where the name is different.

  1. Go west along 14th, stopping at the corner of the park at E and 14th. Look down at the pavement corner, you will see the street name “Porter” stamped in the concrete.
  2. Continue west along 14th street to the corner with D and turn South on D to the corner of D and 15th. Cross to the SW corner and you will see the street name “Brett” in the pavement.
  3. Continue West along 15th to William street corner, where you will see the street name “Britt” in the pavement. Which one is correct? Who knows?
  4. Continue West along 15th to C, cross C and check the NW corner to find the street name “Pacific.” (I think this is the one that is incised and not stamped)
  5. Turn toward downtown (North) on C street and walk along C to 14th. On C street between 14th and 15th are two historic buildings, both now B&Bs, and several other historic homes. At the corner of 14th and C, on both sides of the street, you will see the name “Whipple.”
  6. Walking West along 14th street, continue to the corner of 14th and California, where you will see another “Whipple.”
  7. Turn South (away from downtown) on California back to 15th, then turn East to A street. At the corner of 15th and A, there is another “Pacific,” this one is stamped.
  8. Now take a three-block stretch, South on A, continue to Sonoma. Please take care when crossing Wabash! At the corner of Sonoma and A, you will see “Pratt” in the NW corner.
  9. Turn and walk East on Sonoma, at the next block, corner of Sonoma and B, is another “Pratt.”
  10. Keep going East on Sonoma to C, then turn North (towards downtown) and walk along C to the next block and Del Norte Street. At the NW corner, you will see stamped the street name “Murray.”

Continue back to Hammond Park, or, check out some of the other street corners along the way. Other “Pratt” street stamps are at Sonoma and Fairfield, Spring, and Summer. Somewhere (I forgot to make a note of it!) I saw “Del Nort” (misspelled) in the corner!

East of C and South of Wabash, you will see most of the intersections have red painted curbs and newer, paler concrete at the corner ramps. Most of these have removed the old street names. So far, the ones listed here are the only ones I have been able to locate. If you find any more, or in any other neighborhood send me an email ruthful “at” northcoast “dot” com) with the location.
